After sitting through Bresson's later movies with zombie-like performances, this was quite a different experience. The story was fairly simple and the acting seemed normal enough. I didn't feel challenged at all as I watched it like I did with his other movies I've seen. Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne breezed by. I give it a ***1/2 out of *****.
I read some reviews that mention how the conflict in the movie doesn't really translate well for modern viewers. I really liked that Helene wanted revenge only because Jean agreed with her that there was no passion left in their relationship. People really are petty like that. Her way of getting back at him could still happen today (in a slightly modified way, perhaps), so I'm not sure that the criticisms are entirely valid.
