There's not a whole lot to this movie, because it's basically an "unusual subject matter but conventional story" sort of deal. There's not even that much conflict. Gérard Depardieu falls in love with a dominatrix, but has trouble accepting her lifestyle. He gets jealous, starts snooping around in her secret dealings, she gets pissed off, ect. There are a few graphic bondage scenes to pad things out, but Maitresse is not a very substantial film overall. If you're in the mood for some kinkiness and don't want to think very much, Maitresse isn't too bad. It's slightly humorous, slightly disturbing, but mostly just lightweight. Maybe other viewers will get something more out of it, but I just found it mildly entertaining.

A couple of the stills on DVDBeaver got me interested in the film awhile back, and it looked like something I could enjoy, and Barbet has many Criterions. I will still check it out sometime, but now I am less interested. I thought it would be some kinky, sex-filled character study/deep look at the subject, sad to find out it isn't.

You should watch Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist if you want a graphic look at the bondage lifestyle. It's a documentary about a man dying from cystic fibrosis who has dedicated his life to inflicting pain on himself. True, he's not as cute as the woman in Maitresse, but it's quite a movie. Maitresse does have some graphic scenes, but it doesn't really explore bondage and sadomasochism all that much. Maybe if the story had more to it Maitresse would be a better film. I liked it (6.5/10), but I wasn't wowed by it. I'll have to watch it again to see if I missed any nuances.
