This is one of those movies that has a plot and dialogue, yet none of those things matter as much as how the whole thing flows. 3 Women just has a feel to it that I really like, and I could easily watch it over and over again. Roger Ebert said the movie was like a dream, which I agree with. There's always a slightly unreal quality beneath the surface, even though the story seems normal enough: Sissy Spacek develops an unhealthy fondness for Shelley Duvall and things become uncomfortable, which leads to the out-of-left-field ending. There's a slow progression into weirdness and then it becomes full-blown strange at the last moment. I'm not sure if I actually like the ending, but the rest is captivating.

Altman is one of my favorite directors, I definitely want to pick this one up.

Yes, rewatched this film a couple of days ago and it's one of my twenty favorites. I really like the sunny settings, the atmosphere and coloring. Anyone noticed that Shelley Dvuall's color is yellow (her clothing, car and apartment), Sissy Spacek's color is pink and Janice Rule's color is purple. The ending is still an enigma for me but as you say lordofdance, the rest is captivating... and beautiful!

Persona (1966) 3 Women (1977) Mulholland Dr. (2001) These would make a helluva triple bill for a movie-night.

It grew on me remarkably fast. I even liked the music, which adds to the unsettling quality of the film. Hell, I even thought Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek looked kind of hot a few times, and I've never found either of them attractive. Duvall looks goth on the DVD cover, but it's too bad she doesn't really appear like that in the movie. Then it would really be awesome! Anyway, I'd put it in my Top 25, probably.
