From MoC: "Sad news this morning: prolific cinematographer Sven Nykvist, known for his collaborations with Ingmar Bergman, Roman Polanski, Andrei Tarkovsky, and many others, died today at the age of 83. He was the subject of a documentary by his son, Light Keeps Me Company (2000), which referenced his battle with aphasia, a condition that prompted his retirement in 1998 after having shot 123 films. Read a (translated) excerpt from Sven's memoirs on MoC's Nostalghia.com microsite, here. - D.C. " www.ingmarbergman.se/universe.asp?guid=C67561F2-3BC9-46CA-B7C3-CB5C8592ED03imdb.com/name/nm0005815/

Hey, I've seen both the theatrical and the TV-series version, every Christmas they send it on Norwegian TV but I've never seen the bonus material before and the box looks delicious. Fanny Och Alexander is one of my favorite films, it's in my yop 20 at #12 or #13. My favorite Bergman as well. I am glad you love the film! It is also my favorite Bergman, and my favorite film. I wish they would show it here, and yes, the features should blow you away. I still need to see that Bergman Making-of Documentary on the last disc.

Allright I need to do that as well. I'm going to write a big paper on Bergman for school next year (it's a semester task or what it's called...) and I hope the extras help me with inputs and thoughts for my paper.

I'm halfway considering blind-buying this... Well now I'm HAPPY! I just ordered Fanny and Alexander (Special Edition Five-Disc Set) - Criterion Collection (1983) for just $29.99 at Amazon.com, can you believe this price, this is truly a bargain and a perfect Christmas present for myself! I mean, just look at it. edit: Especially considering the cheapest outside of Amazon's $30 is Overstock's $40+. I'm just not sure if I should blind-buy at $30... I really don't know.

Well I can't tell you that you would like it, but I know the re-sale value will be $30 or more if you don't like it. I know someone on the forum would probably buy it sometime if you didn't like it that much. But it is my favorite film, which is worth $30 just seeing the film. Plus it's Bergman!

I was thinking of watching this in the days leading up to Christmas. Great way to get me in the spirit.

I watched thirty minutes of the abridged version on Xmas.
I can see where all the praise comes from, and it's just too bad that I didn't buy it at Amazon for $30, but I didn't. My plan is to watch it again, proper, next Xmas or something.
