The colors and art decoration in this movie are truly impressive. Sure, the story being about sadistic prostitutes doesn't hurt either, but I'm a sucker for movies with visual flair. This is easily one of my all-time favorites.
Set in Japan after World War II, Gate of Flesh follows a group of prostitutes through stylish sets as they try to survive amongst the desolation. They strictly enforce the rule that no one in their circle can give sex away for free. Anyone guilty of that transgression is tortured and humiliated.
This is great stuff. Even though it was made in the early 60s, this movie wouldn't have too much trouble receiving a R-rating today. Swearing, flashes of nudity and torture combined with attractive visuals... it's like a dream. Kind of depressing, but great stuff.

I didn't quite get that feeling. The film was visually great, but it lacked so much content-wise. It did, at least, not engage me, which was a bit sad, because in periods, in certain scenes, I got a very good feeling about it. As a whole, I liked it only to one extent.
I would recommend the film, nonetheless, because it's a film that can be discussed a whole lot, in addition to be a nice watch.

I admit that I am somewhat superficial when it comes to watching movies. Suspiria is a favorite much for the same reasons I like Gate of Flesh. Visually striking films often appeal to me, particulary when combined with violence, sleaze and atmosphere.
