This was a fun samurai movie if you know how some are like, and can appreciate silly Japanese humor. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't buy it on DVD, in part because the Criterion DVD is, at best, lackluster; with extras that aren't impressive and an inappropriate essay whose langly author attempted to call the director of one of the best samurai movies period - Kobayashi M., the director of Harakiri - a "directorial unlike." (If he had said that of Kurosawa, there'd be hell to pay from all of you. ) The movie is, overall, a very worthwhile rental to check out someday, if you don't mind light hearted samurai hanging out in a story that's like Yojimbo, but more particularly, Sanjuro (because both used the same source material). Silly. Peter Jackson would like this. Potential spoiler, but it shows the kind of silly humor that's present in the movie.9/10 - Didn't make it into my Top 100, however

Well, he's writing about how all of those directors seemed to use standard Japanese conventions. The way he phrases "directorial unlike," though, I could interpret it as meaning that the guy didn't care for these directors, even if he's willing to give Kurosawa a break.
Does that seem reasonable to everyone/anyone else?
