Can you elaborate on the reason why Clark or Korine would have made a terrible film out of this? I haven't seen this yet but that comment interests me.

The incest in this movie made me scratch my head. What the hell message was Malle going for with this? It's supposed to a coming of age film, but how many people can relate to the incest? At least in a positive way. I ejoyed the film somewhat, but I'm not sure what the point is.
I agree with your comment about Clark and Korine. I hate pretty much everything I've seen that Korine was involved with. I saw that Bully movie by Larry Clark and thought it revelled in teen debauchery way too much. Their movies are heavy-handed and repulsive without any justification.

I haven’t ever seen anything like this, a comedy that deals with such a risqué subject so elegantly and respectfully, while at the same time being a coming of age story about a 15 year old boy losing his innocence, while reading ‘mature’ books finding out about sex and love through them, instead of living life and finding out himself. His brothers really do it for him when they take him to a whore house and while he is having sex they sneak in and jump on him. I think that is where you see his character kind of change; he is after women more now. Like I said, the story could make some people back away from the film, since it deals with a son who falls in love with his mother, and vice versa. But it is dealed with in such a way where it never seems sleazy or trashy, Malle deals with the characters and studies them, as they develop and change. One scene that stands out is when Laurent, the kid, walks in on his mom taking a bath. Or when she goes away and he is setting out her underwear and clothes, in a scene that could have been creepy, Malle turns it into a beautiful scene, and a beautiful way to reveal his feelings towards his mother. For a first time actor this is one of the best performances I have seen, and not just for a kid. His emotions are very subdued and buried within. Not to mention the hot actress who plays the mother, Lea Massari. I haven’t seen a film like this, dealing with a teenager’s love. It will definitely find a spot on my list. Please see this film, whatever you do, see this film! Wish there was more to say other than “masterpiece!” Anyone who owns this set, are the features any good? I think it was just a love for your mother, every child loves their mother, maybe not to this extreme though (damn, I have been taking too many men's issues classes at school ).
