Ya, umm, really overrated? I dont think so. How many movies has he directed that you haven't seen. Probably a lot. How about White Hunter, Black Heart. That is his 4th best directorial effort. And I bet none of you have even seen it. As for Million Dollar Baby, I think both of you dismiss it for one of two reasons. They are both ridiculous. The first on is that Hilary Swank has a bad accent. Which, she does not. But lets say she did. Orlando Bloom has a bad accent in the LOTR, that doesnt take away from the movie at all. Second reason, you guys are just PISSED that you boy Scorsese didn't win for the Aviator. Which, I hate to break it too you, wasn't his best movie. He didn't deserve to win for it. He should have an Oscar, there is not doubt about it. But for the Aviator, no. If there is another reason why you dont like it, lets hear it.

Personally I disliked both Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator. In my opinion, Sideways was the best film of '04.
Million Dollar Baby: First things first: Hilary Swank's accent was not bad. Now, onto my rant. The problem with the film was that it was simply too formulaic. Protagonist starts off low, aiming for the big time, they slowly make their way up the ranks, they reach the top (well, in this case it was almost the top) and finally we witness their downfall. This is a structure that has been used a thousand times before. Eastwood wanted me, the viewer, to feel for the characters, and he tried every trick in the book: slow pans, sad music, close ups of characters crying, but because almost the entire film was predictable I could never get it out of my head that it was just a movie, it was just a screenplay being acted out by some damn good actors.
The Aviator: It was entertaining, and the directing was BRILLIANT, but for me it simply wasn't memorable. You may disagree, but this is just my opinion.

Sorry Beef, but the Aviator is great. Knight hit the nail right in the head on Million Dollar Baby (but Swank's accent WAS bad).

Even his lesser films are enjoyable. Million dollar baby was way to stilted and sentimental.

Agentknight: I agree with you on The Aviator. Marty is my favorite director, no doubt about that, but to be honest: The Aviator was not as good as I had hoped for. Sideways is, on the other hand, Brilliant, and should have won, I guess. I like Million Dollar Baby, but understand you, Agentknigh. Good post, I must say.

I loved Aviator but it helped that I knew about Hughes. I think it made the film a better experience knowing his back story. I think it was the best. But thats just my opinion.

Yeah, perhaps I would have appreciated the film a lot more if I knew about Hughes before watching it.

Clint's new films have convinced me of one thing, he is a total film master. In the past few years, he hasn't been able to go wrong with any of his film, they are all sublime pieces of art. He is easily the best director still working today.

He is the best at making films too. Of course this is all my opinion, but before you make judgments, I have one question? Have you seen his latest films?

He is easily the best director still working today. I'll list five better directors in my opinion that come to mind (no order): 1. Bergman, literally a film master who may have made his "last" film recently, but he said his last was Fanny before so I still count him. 2. Scorsese, no words. 3. Almodovar, best of all contemporary filmmakers I have seen recently 4. P.T. Anderson, yep. 5. Tarantino, yeah I went there. He has yet to make a film anywhere close to being bad. Is Godard still directing? If so then he crushes.

Bergman is done, I guarantee it. Scorsese and Clint are even in my opinion, haven't seen any Almodovar, nor do I think I want to. PT is a technical master, but he has yet to make a film that has connected with me personally. And Tarantino is awesome but the number or quality films he has made is dwarfed by the number of quality films that Clint has made. Godard may be better, but he is in the twilight of his career and I have not seen enough films by him in order to give a definitive answer to who is the better director.
Clint connects with me on a more personal level than any other filmmaker working today. Maybe that is better than saying he is the best director working.

In my opinion, Lynch is for example a much better and more interesting director than Clint. I guess Malick isn't much weaker (although I haven't seen his latest effort), not to mention Kitano and van Sant. These are directors I find far more interesting than Clint Eastwood, but one may argue wheather they are better or not...

I also agree that all those filmmakers are more interesting, and probably better. anyways... Universal Home Video has announced the Clint Eastwood: Western Icon Collection which includes High Plains Drifter, Joe Kidd, and Two Mules For Sister Sara. The two-disc package will be available to own from the 1st May, and should retail at around $19.98. Each film will be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English and French Mono tracks. The only extra material will be a theatrical trailer for each of the films. Artwork here

Just a heads up. If you've seen this before, then don't worry, but I figured I'd post it anyways: five-discs - $40It looks like it might have the version of Flags of Our Fathers that you may or may not have already bought, so if you have it, there may be no reason to go for the distance, but if not and you liked both of these movies like the Captain did, then it should be good.

Yeah, I heard about this, hadn't seen the artwork though I don't believe. I am going to rent it someday, or my parents will, but I really think Fags of Our Faggots looks like complete shit, but Iwo Jimo looks really good.

Don't rip a movie you haven't seen. I don't think you would like Flags actually, you are far too close minded when it comes to that movie and to make it worse, its directed to Clint who you love to hate. You would like Letter though, if only because its in a foreign language....

I called it "Spider-Suck 3" right before I saw it, and still liked it. If the movie is good, then I will like it. And my thoughts on the director doesn't matter, I will probably dig Unforgiven, which is by him. Also, I haven't been exactly the biggest fan of American directed foreign films, so because of that isn't why I would like it, I just thought it sounded interesting to see the story told from this side, and some great actors are involved.
