A thief, murderer, and charming lady-killer, Iwao Enokizu (Ken Ogata) is on the run from the police. Director Shohei Imamura turns this fact-based story, of the seventy-eight-day killing spree of a remorseless man from a devoutly Catholic family, into a cold, perverse, and at times diabolically funny tale of the primitive coexisting with the modern. More than just a true-crime case, Vengeance Is Mine bares mankind’s snarling id. - New, restored high-definition digital transfer - Excerpts from a video interview with Shohei Imamura, produced by the Directors Guild of Japan - Theatrical trailer and teaser - New and improved English subtitle translation - PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay by critic Michael Atkinson, a 1994 interview with Imamura by writer Toichi Nakata, and writings from Imamura on Vengeance Is Mine and his approach to filmmaking

This has been on my queue for so long, ever since I saw it on MoC. I cannot fucking wait for this release, easy blind buy for me.

updated. It looks like the MoC release (above) owns this version when it comes to features. I was much more excited about this release before. I will still get it though. Anyone own the MoC release?

the criterion cover destroys the moc cover. and features are overrated, so criterion for me. I kinda dig the MoC cover, but you are right, the Criterion cover smashes it. You will be happy that “The Beaver” said the picture on this version is much better, and although they said the features don't compare, you don't really care about the features, so you should be good. I will probably buy the MoC version just to hear this commentary DVDBeaver said was SO GOOD. I am going to rent it from Netflix, and if it is good enough I will just buy the Criterion first, while I wait to start ordering a bunch of MoC's, then I will just own them both. Check out the review for yourself; look at the comparisons, the Criterion transfer looks smokin' hot. www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews18/Vengeance_Is_Mine_DVD_Review.htm

Ok, this is weird. The release date for this is the 15th, but I just saw a copy of this at Fye today.

And you didn't pick it up? It was probably expensive. How much were they charging for it? They probably just got their shipment in, and put them out before date. Best Buy does that all the time, since they don't care about the release dates. I used to see them do it all the time, but haven't been there recently. I never heard of FYE doing it though. In fact, I doubt our FYE would even stock this film.

It was $30, but I didn't bring my wallet. Plus the other three May releases interest me more.

You go to FYE? ...Without a wallet? Shit's expensive there, and their selection is poor to medium. Don't go in looking for a steal.

Umm, need I remind you, ie, that I basically literally STOLE from that store? Haha, that Wim Wenders set ring a bell? A sticker on there that only said $20 and it was for some other movie. I have actually found some good deals there before. One time they were selling all their old Simpsons sets for $15, so I bought some and sold them. Also, sometimes I see some that have sale stickers on them and are cheap, like I got the two-disc Chariots of Fire for $4.99. But, for the most part, that store is terrible, like you said. I do go in there each time I go into the mall, just in case I run across some deal like the ones I mentioned.

True, to some degree. I found a cheapass box set at FYE the other day, but wasn't too interested in picking it up. Besides that, though, their new shit is fucking expensive. I saw Idiocracy for $30, compared to $15~ on Amazon. Yeah. Oh yeah, it's $20.99 at Amazon.

I just watched this and almost all the violence (at least the graphic stuff) takes place at the beginning. The rest of the movie is a biography of the killer. It deals with his childhood, relationship with his father, and his activities while he was on the run from the law. This might be an interesting movie to watch with Badlands, because there are similarities (both were based on true events). Vengeance Is Mine has a sicker sense of humor, though.
