Star Trek 7/10 I'm not a huge Trek fanboy, so maybe I'm not qualified to give a review of this film. But I'll try anyway. Abrams definitely succeeds in making Trek accessible to those who otherwise would not pay attention to Star Trek. There are enough explosions and action sequences to keep the average moviegoer happy. The plot is good as well, even if it is a bit similar to the time-travel inherent in Lost. Pine, Quinto, and Nimoy are good in their roles, but none of the characters are really anything to write home about. Overall, it came off like a typical summer blockbuster with a better story and a little more depth. However, I don't think that this is the Star Trek film to resurrect the series as it doesn't even come close to Wrath of Khan or The Voyage Home.

Thanks for that Made In U.S.A review. I was debating between buying that and 2 Or 3 Things I Know About Her when they're released on Criterion.

Fireproof 0/10 Watched this in Theology class. Remember when I said A Walk to Remember was one of the worst movies I've ever seen? Well this is ten times worse, if you can imagine that.
Clerks (rewatch) 10/10 A perfect film, compelling, low-budget, and mindblowingly funny. This movie will never get old for me.
Clerks 2 (rewatch) 8/10 Has some absolutely hilarious scenes and great dialogue. However, it gets a bit too sappy at times and doesn't measure up to the greatness of the first film.

The Lady from Shanghai (Orson Welles, 1947)Penniless sailor falls for the wife of a rich lawyer, intrigue abounds on a bizarre yacht cruise, lawyer's despondent partner schemes with the sailor to fake his death, lots of betrayals, lots of things go wrong, sailor gets blamed for LOTS of bad things, conventional courtroom drama, pretty much everyone isn't who they seem and have sinister motives. That's pretty much "Lady from Shanghai" in a nutshell...it's very convoluted, sometimes too much so, and Orson Welles, fake Irish accent and all, was all wrong for the part of the sailor. But otherwise, this was fun. Everett Sloane, the original Marty Feldman, is very slimy and fun to watch (and hate) as the lawyer, and Rita Hayworth...well, isn't it enough to just look at her? A lot of this is just an excuse to show Rita Hayworth, the then-Mrs. Orson Welles, as seductively as possible in both shadow and high-key lighting, but really, is that a bad thing? Her acting leaves something to be a desired - I wasn't buying her duplicitous nature for a second, and by the end it seemed thrown at me all of a sudden - but you can see why a down on his luck sailor would be bewitched. This would've been a throwaway, too-convoluted-for-its-own-good mystery story, but it's at least a little more interesting than that 'cuz of Welles' usual penchant for gloriously self-indulgent shadows and camera angles and unsettling closeups (especially Glenn Anders as Sloane's partner, practically crazed as he tells the sailor about his cockamamie scheme). The big climax, the famous chase and shootout in the funhouse that's been oft-imitated since, is overkill, sure, but still makes a fascinating use of the mirror motif that Welles used so well in "Citizen Kane" and is still an existentialist nightmare that serves as quite a coda to a visually near-stunning film that was nevertheless in danger of getting mired in its own convolutions, but manages to keep its head above the water. Fun. 7.5/10

Red River (Howard Hawks, 1948)Laaaaammmmeeee ending, but everything else was awesome. Sexual tension (girl taking the arrow to her shoulder and shrugging it off, then Monty Cliff nonchalantly sucking the poison out = badass, from both parties), homoerotic tension (rivalry between young gunslingers Monty Clift and John Ireland in an 'i'll show you my gun, you show me yours' scene where phallic implications abound, but sadly that rivalry never really comes to fruition) and that turns out to have reflected real life, John Wayne's best performance that out-nuances his job in The Searchers any day...starts off as typical John Wayne brave western do-gooder, subtly changes over the journey until he's a bitter, gray haired, crazed monster...very nice and unexpected turnaround from ambitious hero to obsessed villain (hell, after he's banished by his fellow herders, they dare not even speak his name lest he sneak up on them and blow them away). And even old Walter Brennan does a nice job in comic relief as the old codger and longtime confidant of Wayne's who's constantly bickering with his Indian lackey. He's a silly character, but his difficulty in having to decide whether or not to continue standing by his old friend who's descended into madness and putting his men in peril was still touching. Overall, other westerns will say they're epic, but this one actually felt epic, and not just because the journey that all the herders go on is vast in distance and impossibly difficult in terms of keeping 9,000 heads of cattle under control (as seen in the showstopping stampede scene, that's begun with a scene of great and agonizingly quiet suspense and descends into all-out chaos). It's epic because of the Shakespearean - hell, the Biblical - relationship between John Wayne as the stubborn man who built his cattle empire from the ground up and Montgomery Clift as the kid he raises as his heir, and son, and how that deep relationship is tested when father goes mad and the son must betray him to protect the legacy that the mad father thinks is being stolen from him. They love each other, even as Wayne vows to kill the kid, but the best thing about what transpires is that that doesn't necessarily mean that he won't kill the kid, so you still worry that something terrible's gonna happen, and the relationship is all the more dynamic. Great tale of obsession and pride and tension, climaxing with one of the best lead-ups to an inevitable Western showdown I've seen, that's unfortunately marred by a horrendous resolution. Otherwise, that's all I gotta say...umm, great cinematography? It's no Ford in terms of looks, but still some great wide shots and intimate, gritty closeups...you really feel like those bulls'll trample ya. This is going straight to my list of 100 favorite films, which was the last thing I expected to do going in. Epic, and unexpectedly great 9/10

The Hangover 5/10 It has its funny moments and the cast definitely has a genuine rapport with one another. And I'm sure that its better than 90% of the other comedies that will come out this summer. But ultimately, its not really a great movie. Its more of a string of jokes and ridiculous situations tied into an 100 minute montage.

Valkyrie 5/10 Cruise and Singer's attempt to bring light to the Von Stauffenberg plot is well intended but ultimately unsatisfying. While the writing is well done and the source material is clearly worth a film interpretation, the acting in the film and the execution is not up to par. None of the actors feel like they were correctly cast, especially Cruise who despite his resemblance to Von Stauffenberg, comes off as mechanical and dry. Overall, a huge disappointment in what could have been a great film.

Return of the Street Fighter 6/10 Fun for what it is but it definitely does not match its predecessor for bad ass kung-fu action. Sonny Chiba is still great though.

Che 9/10 Soderbergh and Del Toro come together to produce a film that creates a lasting impact and offers a look into one of the 20th centuries most controversial figures. This film could have been highly politicized but instead it chooses to take a deep look at Guevara the man rather than examining the ideals that the man held. Del Toro is mesmerizing in the lead role and he carries the film totally. Though his support acts well, none can hold a candle to his performance. Yes, the film is probably an hour too long and by the fourth hour, the viewer is begging for the end. But its length does not diminish the film's impact and fans of historical film should turn out in droves to see this movie.

Top Secret! 6/10 It has its funny moments, like most ZAZ films do. But it comes nowhere near the brilliance of Airplane!

Up! 9.5/10 Pixar definitely does it again with their newest movie. I did not see it in 3D, which might have been a mistake. But the 2D film was more than fine with me. The story was surprisingly touching and had much more depth than one expects in a film for children. The voice acting was wonderful and their were a few moments that had me laughing out loud. Sure, the plot got a bit predictable toward the end and the film isn't as good as other Pixar classics. But overall, it was a very enjoyable film.
