I would say Malick is my second favorite director and I rank his films like this:
1. The New World 2. Days of Heaven 3. The Thin Red Line 4. Badlands

A complete artist. Badlands has all the serenity of a film like blue velvet, its beautifully shot and grounded in how its written and developed. Malick is a complete master, I have got to see more from him!

Yes, Badlands is a fantastic film! I have only seen that and The Thin Red Line, which is a good film, only a bit overlong and oversentimental. It`s even more poetic than Badlands, which is fine, but it gets too much in the end. I think Malick should have shortend the movie down to two hours or so. But hey, it`s a good film. Just not mindblowing. Badlands has so many great shots in it, and the music is almost perfect. Had the content been as great as the form, this film would have easily been in my top 20.
I really want to see more of him myself.

I've only seen The Thin Red Line and that was back in 2002 I think. I really can't remember anything beside all the familiar faces (the cast). I remember I thought it was just a decent film.

I've only seen The New World and The Thin Red Line. I liked the former a lot more, but the latter was also fantastic. A truly brilliant director.

I loved Badlands, liked Thin Red Line, and hated New World. So, I'm still undecided about this director.

Well not hate, just thought it was an excessivly boring film. Sure its beautiful but it was just too drawn out. If you search the rate the last film thread, you will be able to find my full review. I think I gave it a 4 or 5 out of 10.

Honestly, there are plenty of films I find 'boring', but I love anyways (The New World is definatly not boring to me tho!) There are other things to think about, such as why someone else would like it, themes, style (cinematography, music, lighting, etc.) I find Through A Glass Darkly a bit tedious, but just because Im not having the most fun watching it, I still love that movie with a PASSION. Sure, if you think a film that tries to be fun, but is boring, like Grandma's Boy for example, and you rate it low for that, I'm fine with it, but The New World is not trying to be the most entertaining movie ever, imo.
Idk, my opinion is usually rediculous anyways.

Oh God, so today, we finished up are last scheduled movie in that movie class I was taking, and we were allowed to bring in any movie we wanted, so I brought in Badlands for some reason, and no one else brought in anything, except for this one kid who brought in this crap movie called like Excepted or something. Everyone said “no” to mine, but I told the teacher the other film looked moronic, so he obviously picked my choice. Then someone asked me when it was from and I said “the seventies” and he said “it is that old, it must suck.” It made me sick, then no one would give it a chance and you could just hear everyone in class complaining. Not to mention most of the people didn’t know I brought it in, but then the teacher told them, so now everyone wants to beat me up and shit. I wanted to get up in front of the class and say something like “you obviously won’t like these, since your taste in films is so poor, but if you don’t realize the art in this film, then you are complete retards.” But then I remembered, they already are retards, and they probably wouldn’t even know what I was talking about.
Then, we only got to watch like the first twenty minutes of it, and EVERYONE hated it so much. People didn’t even see how well it was shot, or hear the score, or anything. Not even the narration! People really piss me off. Anyone think of bunch of retards like this might like the film? I doubt they will, but it does have killing in it, so that might get them interested or something.

that is simply tragic. What kind of film class is this? Is is mandatory or a class you choose to take? If it's the latter then at least these kids should be interested in watching them. What would they rather watch? Fucking POTC and shit like that? Well, you should have brought something more contemporary or accessible like Goodfellas or GBU or something.

What did Mr. Scharrer have to say about it? And to wkw, its an elective. But everyone takes it because its a class where you watch movies and do next to nothing. It is pretty much a glorified study hall for most. I took it because I thought we would be watching some quality films (which we did on some occasions). But we also watched some trash.

I would have brought in something more accessible, but we couldn't bring in movies rated "R", also, right after I watched Badlands for the first time, for some reason, I just said to myself that I needed to take it in. I figured they wouldn't like it. And yes, these people would like to watch shit like that. I did think about what I could take in for a long time, I wanted to take in a foreign movie or something, since that would have been super funny, but couldn't come up with one. "And yes, these people would like to watch shit like that"
Are you referring to Goodfellas and GBU?
Concerining The Thin Red Line: I thought it was too sentimental and too long for it's own good, but a nice film nevertheless, with some amazing cinematography and a very poetic (it's Malick, after all) tone all the way through. Like with The New World, I feel that Malick is trying a bit too much here, conveying some (often very interesting) poetic expressions and personal thoughts towards the destructive nature of war. A colourful film, definitely, but too pushy in some of it's "significance".
My two cents.

I was referring to his mention of POTC ( Pirates of the Caribbean). Yeah, I noticed its length right off the bat, but that doesn't scare me, I hope you are wrong about it being overly-sentimental, though. I have heard people call it his best, his worst, and all that in-between, so I don't know what to expect till I watch it. I will probably watch it today. Have you seen Days of Heaven, kiddo?

Days of Heaven is the only Malick I haven't seen. Really, really want to, though.
The Thin Red Line is a beautiful film, cm. You will probably like it. It's just that personally I would have looked upon it as a masterpiece or something close to it, if the strong "colour" of the poetic aspect had been somewhat reduced a little.

Oh man, you should definitely like Days of Heaven, you will probably like it more than Badlands. The shots, the performances, everything, it is just perfect. I love the look of the film, probably just as much as Badlands or more. Yeah, I look forward to Thin Red Line a lot, as well as I look forward to New World.

How did you feel it was too sentimental, I didn't really think so, at least not too much? Wouldn't, if they took out that sentimentality, you feel cold at the end of the film, like you did with Badlands? Anyways, it is probably the best [American] war film I since Full Metal Jacket and still to this day. And guess what, kiddo, ptahole let me borrow New World! P.S. Jesus Christ: “In the summer of 1978, Malick had begun work on this film, which was his most ambitious project. It was called Q at the time, but now it has returned with the title Tree of Life.”

Glad you liked it! I guess you misunderstood me a little: I would've liked the sentimentality somewhat reduced, not taken out of the film. The sentimentality is the film in a way, and if you'd taken that aspect away from it, it would most probably have been a completely different sort of film. I just think it's all to much; the dose of sentimentality and the lenght of the film are both elements overly substantial.
The New World is a great film. I look forward to your thoughts. The first hour or so are totally mindblowing.

I watched Days of Heaven sunday night with my brother, his fiance, my deceased fathers girlriend, my mom, my sister and her boyfriend, and everyone in the room loved the film. Completely silent throughout the film, no one would shut up about how much they loved it. Suffice to say I made copies for everyone and gave away mine also. Cant wait till the CC edish drops.

I just think it's all to much; the dose of sentimentality and the lenght of the film are both elements overly substantial. The New World is a great film. I look forward to your thoughts. The first hour or so are totally mindblowing. I guess I can see that, I was just so caught up in the film that it seemed to fly by for me. My Netflix package said "3 Hrs." so when I got to like 2 hrs. 40 minutes and it ended, I had to rewind the film three times and watch the ending over, I wished it had gone on longer, yet the ending was so perfect. The sentimentality in the film isn't too jarring or anything for me, I was overly satisfied with the film, and it didn't take me out of the film, or change what I thought of it. Yeah, I plan on popping that in sometime tonight, and probably finishing it today or tomorrow. When I saw the trailer, before I knew who Malick was, I thought it looked terrible, not to mention it had the terrible Colin Ferrell, then I found out who he was, and how good the film was suppose to be, only days after I had missed the chance of seeing it in the theater. I am super surprised most of you rank it so high out of the Malick films. So that is actually coming out? I can't believe it; I had no clue Criterion would even get a chance to release it. Now my question is, will Malick finally breakdown and do some features? And, hopefully there are plans on releasing his other films, especially Badlands.
