What does being technically good have anything to do with me liking him? Technically to who? You? Critics? Other people? It doesn't matter that something is technically good, that's what I hate, when you should like something because everyone else says it is good.
It doesn't matter what the lyrics are, what I mean by loving America or whatever I said is more the way he sings his songs, so, dare I not think of any other word than poppy or too radio-y?
His lyrics do nothing for me in that I don't care what he is saying at all, in fact most of the time I am just so fucking irritated by how stupid he sounds singing to even care about what he has to say. I don't take anything away from the lyrics, like sacrilegend said, “There is nothing profound about the lyrics, or moving in any way.”
I don't like bands that "jam," I have said this (some exceptions). Especially the middle of the song was when I forgot I was even listening to music and just starting thinking of something else because I was so bored.
Not a fan of country or jazz and saying they were too nice was just because I couldn't think of any way to describe what I feel about the music, I can't say “poppy” or “terrible” because those you have already said aren't good enough reasons, even though those are the reasons.
You keep saying things like “even if I don't like his voice I should still like him because it is technically good”? That is so fucking stupid, it's like saying "even though the movie was terrible, it was still technically good (bay films)." If I don't like it, and if it totally makes me sick to even listen to it, then I don't see why I should like the music.
I give reasons for not liking him, or anything about him and there is nothing more I can say. Me saying I don't like his voice, his music bores me and I would never listen to him, his lyrics don't do anything for me, they don't make me feel anything, so there goes liking him, even though I fucking hate his voice, because his lyrics are good. I am not against hearing something by him; I will be honest about my opinions, as I try to be always. These opinions are just based on all the crap I have heard from him so far.

That was harsh! But probably necessary.
And hey, I have a question... Why can't Bob Dylan sing?

I am not against hearing something by him; I will be honest about my opinions, as I try to be always. These opinions are just based on all the crap I have heard from him so far. Technically means characteristics of his voice. Tone, pitch, etc etc. These are technical terms. So technically, why don't you like his voice. "It sounds stupid." O, there is an intelligent response. Maybe you are the one who is stupid. Radio-y. Thats a word. Springsteen got played on the radio a lot in his day. I admit that. But don't the Beatles sounds poppy and (using your word) radio-y too. Yet, they are among your favorite bands. You are contradicting yourself. Bruce has often written moving and profound lyrics. The whole Nebraska and Devils and Dust albums contain several songs with moving or profound lyrics. Go read them see for yourself. But Bruce's best album lyrically is The Rising. His response to the 9/11 attacks on America. Go read some of the lyrics off that album and tell me you are not moved or inspired. I dare you. Bruce's band doesn't jam nearly at all. Jungleland is the only song that contains anything near a jam on any of Bruce's records. And every band jams. Its a fact. In order to get music, you have to jam in order to find out certain things that work together in order to create a song. Mostly, if a song didn't have lyrics, it would be a jam. If you were actually listening to the music instead of half ass listening to the music, you wouldn't have forgot you were listening to music. Actually hearing an album for the first time should be an experience where you have no distractions and are hearing each aspect of the song in your head. Poppy, terrible, and nice are not reasons for not liking music. Tell me which parts of song you don't like. Which instruments are not playing soundly or which parts of the music do you feel not connect with the music. Is the band off-key, do the lyrics not go with the music, is Bruce just randomly screaming things out over an off key drum part or something. These are reasons for not liking music. Not nice or terrible. I reiterate my statement from before about music being a technical business. Its all about different keys and pitches meshing together to form something we call melody and harmony in music. I hate that statement, "It makes me sick." That is ridiculous. You are not literally getting the flu from listening to Bruce's music. I know its a figure of speech but it is disrespectful and just pisses me off even more. The point I was making about Dylan's voice is that voice is not essential in liking music. If you don't like someone's voice in a song, that should not stop you from liking the song all together. In the end, you have failed to convince me at all that you have any real musical opinion at all on Bruce. Another contradiction. Though I may have taken you out of context somewhat.

That was harsh! But probably necessary. And hey, I have a question... Why can't Bob Dylan sing? He can't, he just has one vocal pitch he sings in all the time. I mean, name me one song in which Dylan's voice sounds higher or lower than it does in other songs. I might have missed it somewhere down the road, but overall he sings in one pitch all the time. It works with his music very well, but I don't necessarily like his voice.

There aren't any... I don't think you missed this prodigal song, otherwise, it would be you and I both. I just like his voice, you're right, it works well with his music.
I grew up listening to him on Sunday mornings, he's synonymnous with my dad and flapjacks and just chilling. That's probably why I don't mind the pitch-problem, I obviously just got conditioned.

In the end, you have failed to convince me at all that you have any real musical opinion at all on Bruce. These comments may be short; I am running out of steam. I am listening to "Tombstone Blues" while writing as well. Well technically I think people from the south sound like idiots, opinion actually but still. Some voices just make people sound stupid to me, even if they may be much smarter than I. It doesn't matter if he actually got played on the radio; it is that sound that people often describe as “radio-y.” The Beatles are just amazing, plus I actually enjoy listening to them. They don't sound like how I am using the word "radio-y," at least to me they don't. Well a lot of what he is writing about doesn't concern me, or doesn't grab me in anyway, like I don't care at all about 9/11. I was just saying that I don't enjoy jamming often, which is why I didn't like that part in the song; he is definitely not a jam band or anything. I didn't have any distractions; I was in Joel's car, all completely silent, just sitting there. I was listening to the song, and then just didn't even realize it was still going. "Nice" and "terrible" were words I was using to describe what I didn't like about his voice, which is one of the things I don't like about him. First off the music doesn't come off as enjoyable for me, sometimes there is very little music which lets his voice be even more irritating, or other times there is a band and I don't actually like jazz, or saxophones and all that stuff (which I have said before). I don't think it sounds good. If he really wanted the lyrics to fit with the music it would just be an acoustic guitar, but then his voice would become to irritating to me. "baby we were born to run" Well you should be used to me saying stuff "makes me sick" more meaning it makes me very unhappy. For me a song doesn't have to be technically perfect, or even technically good. It just has to grab me, or make me happy to listen to, or many other things as well. I know there are things that you don’t enjoy listening to, even if other people do. (Christ, I am almost finished listening to "Queen Jane Approximately".)

He is from New Jersey. There goes that explanation. The Beatles sound more built for the radio then Bruce does. Seriously, the Beatles are totally more pop than rock in their first few records. If you didn't use such a vague word like radio-y maybe I could understand why you think Bruce sound more like pop music than the early Beatles records. O, 9/11. You don't care about 9/11. I never knew that before. Jazz is a very broad category of music, of which I doubt you have heard very much of. And yet you dismiss it almost immediately without any real reason. Just another chapter in why you need a crash course in music. Why don't you like the saxophone? Is their a technical quality of it that you don't like? Or do you just dismiss the whole instrument just because you feel like it? You go back to not liking his voice. But you still don't give me a technical reason for not liking it. You are typing hundreds of words without saying a fucking thing. Almost as bad as ie.

Watch me listen to a song, and I will sing it afterwards the way he sounds (Joel has heard me do it, then you will at least see how stupid he sounds, although you will probably say he sounds good). Another example: "Pink Cadillac." I keep saying the same things because that is what I think, I can't just come up with stuff that I don't actually think.

What do you find irritating about Bruce's voice? Is it the speed at which he sings, his tone, or his pitch? Something else perhaps that I am forgetting? I am repeating myself because you keep dodging my questions over and over again. Make it easy on yourself, do some research and come up with some technical reasons for not liking Bruce. I am sure Bruce donated money to 9/11. He is a millionaire and generally a guy who donates time and money towards political causes and such. So, I wouldn't be surprised if he downloaded a hefty amount to the Red Cross and such. I actually listen to every record for the first time with headphones, its the only way to do it. If you are distracted upon first listen to an album, then you are not truly listening to the album. Its just background music. I don't care about the jazz thread. I care about your opinion on jazz and why you don't like it. What characteristics of jazz do you not like? The improvisation? A certain style such as bebop? Or do you just not like it for the sake of not liking it, which you seem to do with a lot of music. I want to hear your opinion again. And you dodged my question about the saxophone. Why don't you like it? Its not a strictly jazz instrument, it is used in various styles of music?? What qualities of the saxophone's sound do you not like? There must be a technical reason for you not liking something. You can't just not like it. There must be some aspect of it that you don't like. I can come up for reasons for everything I don't like musically. I can't think of one example where I can't explain myself technically. I don't want to hear you sing a Bruce song. You can't sing like Bruce, and in fact, from what I've heard, you can't sing at all. And Pink Cadillac is a throwaway song that was on his b-sides record. It is in the bottom tier of Bruce's massive catalog. Pick something else that you think is an example of Bruce's inability to produce good music. Maybe if you thought a little deeper and researched a little, you would find something new to say instead of your same old bullshit. I still have not heard anything that I would call a respectable and airtight opinion from you.

I was just giving an example of another voice I find irritating. I'll listen to the record, but I hope he at least donated the money towards 9/11 stuff, and not just made to the album to capitalize on suffering, I hate that. (Although the south park episode was hilarious.) I suppose the only other way to listen would be headphones, although it isn't like you listen to every band/song with headphones on. I already said in the jazz thread I think that I don't like it and then asked for some things I should check out. I am interested in some of the stuff andruini mentioned over there. Why does there need to be a technical reason for not liking something? I don't like his voice because, oh yeah, now I remember what I was going to call him lol, a drunk sounding Elvis. I still have not heard anything that I would call a respectable and airtight opinion from you. He sings slow, and has an accent and tone of voice that I don't like. It sounds scratchy, and he drags out words. Very much like most country music. I don't need to do research to come up with my own opinions. I was just wondering. I said I don't find jazz entertaining or interesting, but that I hadn't heard enough so I asked for recommendations. Saxophone and all instruments used in big bands like that, I don't enjoy the way they all sound together playing, there are some instances where I may like it though. Who says there must be technical reasons for not liking something? Me not connecting with music because his voice throws me off and it is not my kind of music should be good enough. I heard all those songs that you played me, “Youngstown” (which has great guitar actually, it is just his voice sounds too scratchy to me), “I’m on Fire” (which sounds a lot like Elvis actually, mixed with country which I didn’t like), “Backstreets” (which has one of the most annoying chorus’ I have heard ‘HiiIIIiiiiiiiiiIddddiiiiiinnnnnngggggg on the backstreets’), “Glory Days” (which is just terrible, that sounds so much like radio music [which isn’t always bad, but in this case, oh god]), “Hungry Heart” (which actually didn’t sound like his voice that much, but had the same sound as the last one), “How Can a Poor Man…” (SO much better than other songs by him, not amazing but I could see myself listening to this a couple times actually), and tons more of his stuff. You haven't heard anything worthy because your opinion differs from mine; I have said what I think to you. Just because you don't feel the same way you keep asking me for technical reasons, I don't ask you that when I disagree with you on a movie. If you say it is boring, I don't ask you what makes it boring. It is your opinion.

If you say it is boring, I don't ask you what makes it boring. It is your opinion. Scratchy??? How can you say his voice is scratchy if you like Dylan's voice. Dylan's voice is scratchier than any other voice out there. He doesn't sing slow all the time, on his first records he is singing so fast its nearly rap. If you want fast singing, check out Greetings from Asbury Park. A tone of voice you don't like? Thats too vague. I don't really understand what you don't like about it. You don't find jazz entertaining and interesting. Why? Maybe it is just a sign of the times and a flaw in your personality. You need to be stimulated at ever moment in order to enjoy something. It is a flaw in much of today's youth (myself not included). You just dismissed nearly 15 instruments without saying why or giving any reasons why you don't like their sound. And the saxophone is the only big band instrument in Bruce's band, so when it is playing, it is playing in a rock style with other rock instruments. Not all jazz is big band mind you, in fact most later jazz is played in trios and bands of just four or five members. The songs you mentioned are all great songs. Youngstown is lower tier Bruce but still a good song. Again with the scratchy thing. I just don't buy that. I'm On Fire, once again, lower tier, but awesome live. Did you hear the live version? Now Backstreets, that is his best song. The chorus where he screams to kick start it is one of the best moments in rock history. The music is powerful as are the lyrics and Bruce's voice. Bruce shows off every aspect of his voice in this song. Annoying. Thats pretty amusing. Annoying, why is it annoying? What do you feel is wrong with his voice in during this line? Is it too high, does he sing it with too much feeling? What is it? Annoying is too vague of a word. Glory Days is an excellent song and once again you bring up the radio music argument which contradicts your liking of other bands that are radio music. Hungry Heart is a great song as well and you bring up the radio music point again. One of the dumbest arguments that I have ever heard. How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live is one of Bruce's best songs since The Rising. And I saw it live, if you like that, check out his Seeger sessions record. I feel differently about what constitutes music than I feel about what constitutes movies. Music is a more technical business. I feel that in order to like or dislike music, you must be somewhat familiar with the technical side of it. And you have shown you are completely ignorant of this matter, so I disregard your opinion once again.

I say what I don't like about it, I have tried to explain it, I can't describe it any better. At times he sounds country, others he is too slow, others he is too radio-y, all of which I don't like. And those reasons I don't see how you can't understand. Yeah, I admit it, I find jazz boring. I am not the only one; jazz is an acquired taste, one that I am trying to like. Yeah, I am not saying each instrument is bad, I just don't care for big band music, sometimes it can be good. Don't have any reasons, just don't like it. What's wrong with his voice? I will check out those albums you said sometime. So to have an opinion I have to know the technical side of music? Fergie sucks, so I guess that opinion doesn't make sense to you or you don't find it worthy, or is it now worthy because you agree with me this time? Your logic is flawed; I can have whatever opinion I want. And this reminds me of you saying the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan has a voice you don't like, which was the only reason you could come up with besides the ridiculous "can't reproduce music live," which doesn't even make any sense. I have seen them play live on videos and they are great, so that reason doesn't even count. I am just giving you an example of something I didn't bust your balls about even though you have even fewer reasons for not liking a critically acclaimed band than I do. Unless you have more... My opinions are mine, I don't see the point in having to prove that I don't like something that I already proved. If you agreed with me you wouldn't make this big a deal out of this.

My opinions are mine, I don't see the point in having to prove that I don't like something that I already proved. If you agreed with me you wouldn't make this big a deal out of this. Bruce doesn't sound country at all. His voice is rootsy and home grown. Too slow, on which song is he too slow? I wanna hear your meaning of slow. If its a ballad, of course its gonna be slow, you don't hear very many singers flying through a ballad do you? Radio-y, back to this word again huh? You have still not anything about how you are contradicting yourself by calling Bruce this made up word, yet you love other bands that I believe would fall under this same category. Jazz may be an acquired taste, but it is a taste you need to get into. Jazz is almost as rewarding as rock 'n roll and it is the only form of music other than rock and country to come directly from your home country, America. It is necessary to have an understanding of jazz if you want to become a true listener of good music. Big Band music is an excellent style of music, why don't you like it? Which quality of it do you find unappealing? The scream kick starts the chorus with an unbelievable amount of energy. Too loud??? I can't believe you just said that when you listen to skull numbing hardcore and ear bleeding heavy metal vocalist who scream louder and longer than Bruce ever has on a record. Bruce's yell is not even a scream and its not like its high pitched. Its the perfect pitch, its sung at the perfect time, its the perfect yell over the perfect music and all you can think of to rebut this claim is that he sounds like an idiot. Nice job, you have transcended the level of stupidity that I thought was possible in a human brain. Bon Jovi? You are comparing Bruce Springsteen to Bon FUCKING Jovi???!!!! Bon Jovi is hair metal of the worst sort. They build their music specifically for the radio. They are the definition of a radio band. They are the type of "radio-y" music that you have been speaking about this whole time. Bruce doesn't make his music for the radio, in fact he hasn't had a song played on the radio since Born in the USA and he has made about 8 albums since that record. Bruce is ten thousand times more pivotal to the development of music than Bon Jovi could ever hope to be. That comparison is also weak because Springsteen cut his chops in sweaty bars in the late sixties and he still plays his shows with virtually no special effects or lighting. Bon Jovi came about in the mid 80's with big hair, big make up, and a big ass grin on their face. Two different artists, two different sounds. Comparing them makes you look and sound like a totally ignorant piece of shit. Fergie sucks because she cannot write a piece of music that is even halfway decent. Her voice is produced twelve times before being put on record and she is selling her records based on sex appeal rather than actual content. The logic of Fergie sucks because she just does doesn't work and if you said that, I would disregard your opinion on her. Why don't I like the Smashing Pumpkins. Well here is one reason, Billy Corgan's voice has a very nasal quality to it. It sounds like he is singing straight out of his nose. He sings with that same nasal voice on almost every one of his songs and absolutely can't stand it. It never changes, it always stays nasal and always stays in the same pitch. Another reason I don't like the Smashing Pumpkins is because it is virtually a Billy Corgan solo project. Why doesn't he just stamp his fucking name on the record instead of the bands name. I hate Billy Corgan's voice because of the aforementioned reasons and the fact that the other members add virtually nothing to the records just angers me more. Don't give me any of that, "O, James Iha wrote some songs" shit. His contributions are minimal at best, and even on his songs I wouldn't be surprised if Billy tweaked the music and the lyrics to his own liking. I also hate the fact that they tried to bring back the seventies era rock band sound with some of their records. The seventies are over Billy, you can't bring them back. His attempts at becoming a sort of progressive stadium rock band failed as soon as they showed up on stage. They suck live, I've seen videos. as well. Show me one that you think is good and I will tell you why I don't like it. And unlike you with Bruce, I have heard every one of the Pumpkins records and none of them are any good. I used to like Siamese Dream but upon re-listen I realized that it wasn't all that different from the other Pumpkins records that I had listened to and hated. On Bruce, I still don't accept your opinion. It may be your own, but your own opinion has gotta have some reasons behind it. And I just don't buy the reasons that you have supplied me thus far. You got yourself into this mess by disliking one of my favorite artists without any real reason for it. You give me some valid reasons on why you don't like him, I will accept your opinion, but still encourage you to delve into Bruce deeper. But until then, your opinion means jack shit to me.

No, he says his words too slow, like drags them out, he does it in a bunch of songs, I will think of some examples later. I already said I find it boring, is that a word you don’t understand? “What about it is boring to you?” The music. It is as simple as that. THAT is what is boring about it, there doesn’t need to be anything else. If I don’t enjoy listening to the music, I don’t. Like I said, I will check out some jazz sometime. Now you are just being stupid, you obviously know how he sounds. It is not like he sounds like anything else which is why I can’t come up with words you find “work;” whatever sound you hear when listening to him is what I don’t like. It isn’t that hard to understand. Well I hate both of them equally; well I actually like Bruce more. They both have a pop, radio sound to me. Not all the time though, and when Bruce doesn’t he sounds like a country artist, or has other things that I don’t like. Whether you think differently is your opinion, and mine is mine, that is just where are opinions differ. Fergie sucks. You opinion on The Pumpkins does jack shit for me. I say the same things, but because you think differently you don’t respect my opinion. Just because you like something and don’t agree you can’t just cancel out all my opinions because you don’t agree. I don’t buy your opinions on Wassup Rockers and many other things, but I those are your own, I can’t do anything about them. I will listen to more Bruce, when you play me some of his stuff. Until then, his music does jack shit for me.

Until then, his music does jack shit for me. He drags out his words. What song? Give me an example of a song where he drags his words out. The music is boring to you. Why is it boring? Seriously it can't be boring just for the sake of being boring. There has to be an aspect of the music that bores you. Is it too technical or can you just not get a pit going to it so it is immediately boring. You must elaborate on why you feel it is boring. A lot of good music isn't fun to listen to. Just because you are not completely entertained by the music doesn't mean that it is not good music. Sit down and listen to some Miles Davis or Coltrane sometime, see what you think. No, the thing is, I don't understand. I don't understand how you can like a band like the Beatles, who have a very obviously radio made sound. But you don't like Bruce, who you says has a very radio made sound when he really does not. Bruce doesn't have the same type of radio sound that Bon Jovi does. Are you saying a song like "Have A Nice Day" sound like a Bruce song? Because if you do, that is bullshit. They sound nothing alike and it is simply ridiculous to compare those two bands. Bruce has never sounded like a country artist before this latest record. He is either rock, folk, or borderline pop. My opinion on the Pumpkins is valid because I list technical reasons for not liking Corgan's voice and because I feel that they are inadequate in a live format. You however, still fail to list any technical reasons for why you don't like Bruce's voice, lyrics, or music. So therefore, your opinion on Bruce fails to in its efforts to be a valid opinion. Name one band that you don't buy my opinion on. I will explain to you my opinion as thoroughly as I can. Stating technical reasons and any type of reasons that you ask for. This is a music forum, don't bring discussion on a movie in here. Your opinion on Bruce still doesn't work for me. I have trouble believing that you truly don't like his work. I think its more of a personal barrier for you where you can't like certain forms of music because it is considered "radio-y" or mainstream. I think this is your main reason for not liking Bruce, not his actual music.

While I agree that Dan is a fool for not liking Springsteen, I think it's a little ridiculous to say that you demand he critically analyze every piece of music he hears. I hate Hinder, and can give general reasons for why, but do I need to give a college thesis on it? No. Dan's opinion is still shit, though.

I want him to analyze it. Disliking Hinder, a fairly shitty new band who has decided that they are the resurgence of rock, when all they really are is another Nickelback knockoff, and disliking a universally accepted god of rock like Springsteen are two totally different things. Its pretty simple to discern why a person with decent music taste would dislike Hinder, it is not simple to figure out why someone dislikes Springsteen.

Yea, but I was expecting for that to change on prior discussions, so I didn't really take it all that seriously. But now, its for real.

Why does this matter so much?
Spingsteen doesn't put c-dawg in the mood to groove. That's unfortunate, but that's more of a personal matter. Maybe he doesn't need to spread his propagana to others, but to be perfectly honest, the endless bitching about how poor his tastes are and whatever isn't going to suddenly inspire him to give you a straight answer. Quite the opposite has happened.

It matters to me, knocking one of my top five artists without a straight answer hurts me personally. What bothers me more is that he seems to think Bruce produces bad music, which is just bullshit. He doesn't have to give me an explanation if he doesn't want to, but if he doesn't, I just lose respect for some of his taste.
