I'm very tempted to start playing guitar and would like to hear anyones experiences. I plan to teach myself and get help from friends as I wouldn't be to afford lessons. Bear in mind I no absolutely nothing about guitar..

I have been playing guitar for about three years now. I can provide any help that you need as a beginner.

I dont know whether to get an electric guitar or an acoustic. What are the benefits and differences of each (discarding the fact that and electric guitar is electric )

Electric- Acoustic is the way to go for beginners. Electric has to be plugged in in order to hear it. Electric-Acoustics can be plugged in and they can be played without being plugged in.

Sure, an acoustic is perfectly fine. When you get through about a year or a year and a half of playing, if you feel like playing guitar is something you wanna do forever, then you can buy an electric and an amp.

I've played guitar since I was 7. It's a great thing to know how to do, but I can't stress enough: practice, practice, practice.

Yeah, sure, I play. I can't read music, but yeah, sure, you don't need to know shit to play any Green Day song. My experience is that if you wanted to, you could play a whole Green Day song on one string, and probably be mostly accurate.
I think Nirvana's music is a step up from that. They do a lot of power chords, so, instead of one string to play all of their songs, you got two. Or whatever, I don't know a whole lot about how to play music, so you can correct me, but I don't want to hear too much bitching.
An acoustic guitar is louder, because it has a hollow body, so really, you don't need an amplifer for it.
But then again, noodling around on an electric guitar is great. I rarely play guitar these days, but I've rarely brought out my acoustic guitar. I just feel more comfortable on the electric, and I feel like I can produce more interesting sounds on it than with the acoustic.
I just got a standard little Yamaha electric guitar and amp combo for about $200. It'll work for you if you want to just jam, and while $200 may be a few Criterion Collection DVDs, you gotta ask yourself: DO YOU WANT TO ROCK?

I think I'll start out getting a cheap acoustic for about $100 as I might suck and end up never using it. But Im keen to learn and will be readily patient in learning so I hope I can get the hang of things to some degree...

Yeah, that'll work too.
If you get a cheap acoustic guitar, you can beat the shit out of it before you learn how to play, and not have to worry about ruining your only axe.

I am actually thinking about getting a guitar; I use to play but gave up (like most things I start). I think I would like to give it another go though. It would be awesome to be able to play something, just to pull it out and play the simple, yet amazing Iron Man whenever I want.

Smoke on the Water is easy. However, Under Pressure by Queen is the world's easiest bassline. I would challenge you to find an easier song to play, but then you'd just come up with nothing. By no one. And then I'd lose.

Actually, I think I'll get the cheaper plain acoustic one for £69.99 because I played around with my friends guitar for a bit and seemed to get on better with an acoustic as it was lighter and stuff. Rather than his electro-acoustic I've decided to start learning chords and tabs, is this the best way to go? I suppose it may take a while but be worth it in the long run. I'll probably get my guitar in the next month or so. Gig tickets to see Lostprophets has sapped my money for this month

Err btw, this may seem like a very dumb question, but do you read tablature across or downwards? I'm guessing across, but I just have to check

I chose my guitar. Tanglewood deluxe, Apparently its an ideal started guitar and it comes bundled with a case, strap, plectrums and a tutorial dvd. But I can't have it till christmas I totally want it now! I'm so psyched about learning!

I got a new teacher, he played with on a tour with Michael Jackson, he is the man and he is easily the best guitarist I have ever played with.

www.myspace.com/westernworld <--- My guitar teacher (on the left, the Jim Neversink of Jim Neversink) He rocks! and he's teaching me for free, because I just have some natural rocking skills! He gave me an old acousitc with cactuses painted on I'm jamming it up! I also stole his electric and amp for a night and tormented my sister while my mom was away. I can't wait to actually start to know how to play. Damn!

Guitar is aoog dufn, real satisfying. I think Im going ot get a new one next month though. Partly because I want electric as well as acoustic and the guitar I have is really difficult to play, its strung high and the strings kill my fingers, not good

You will develop callouses over time. In about a year, you won't even blister anymore.

Thats got to be the worst typo ever. I didn't even notice it. Good fun being the correct 2 words. Anyway, I know what you mean, I have developed harder fingertips but I seriously think this is a poor guitar, my friend, who plays very well said it was bad and hurting his fingers and by comparison, it is outrageously hard on the top few frets.
