8 1/2
I knew it would be good but... woah mamma! At times it does drift off a little, but the best moments are nothing less than genius. The dancing on the beach, Mastroianni getting his women under control with the whip, it was all so great. I found it very easy to differentiate between the dream sequences and real life, which can be accounted to Fellini's masterful direction. Next on the list, La Dolce Vita.
10/10

Punch Drunk Love (Paul Thomas Anderson; 2002) I love this movie. PTA's second best movie. Beautifully shot, acted, and written. Probably the greatest film romance in the past 20 years. 10/10

George Washington (Green, David Gordon 2000 IMDB) 10/10 Oh my God I have just seen yet another great film! This was just an amazing little film perfectly shot and acted. The acting is not academy award winning acting it is real and genuine. The kids are not looked down upon at all during this which is rare for a film. The scene towards the end between Vern and Sonya, is heartbreaking and very real but is one of my favorites. The movie actually moves along fairly quickly and seemed to be even shorter than its already short 1 hour 25 minutes. This film needs to be seen and is one of the best films so far this decade!

Glengarry Glen Ross 1992 (rewatch) *****/***** www.rottentomatoes.com/m/glengarry_glen_ross/This is such a great film. The best modern ensemble cast (even Jack Lemmon said so & he should know) with one of the best scripts (David Mamet from his Pulitzer prizewinning play). GGR crackles & fizzes with a rare energy and is utterly compelling. The best modern film (along with Blue Collar) about how the working man gets f***ed over. Please try to see it if you haven't. The character of Gil the salesman in The Simpsons was inspired by Jack Lemmon's character. Genius begets genius huh? Check out the Rotten Tomatoes link and look at that percentage.

Stranger Than Paradise 10/10 Such an excellent film from Jarmusch. This films is all about atmosphere and characters. Some people have accused it of not having enough plot, but they are missing the entire point of the film. Its all about examining the boredom of people and the ways in which the relieve it. It is also a very funny film, but in a very subtle way. The black and white photography works just as well in this film as it does in Dead Man. I cannot imagine this film without it.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada 10/10 This is a perfect example of how to combine visual beauty and an exceptional plot. Jones uses a wonderful techinque to tell you the story of the film. He alternates between current time and flashbacks without you even realizing it. I was half way through the film before I realized that I was seeing flashbacks. Every performance is great, but Jones and Pepper shine brighter than the rest. An excellent film that The New World should take some cues from. You CAN use beauty and still make an excellent movie.

400 Blows (Truffaut, François 1959 IMDB) 10/10! Easily one of the top 10 best movies ever made. This film is so much fun. I had a blast watching Antoine and his friend skip school. But it isn't all fun; every time I thought Antoine would finally get out and away from everyone his freedom is taken away from him. It is a perfect movie masterfully directed by Truffaut. The kid does a great job and is very believable in the role. This is easily one of the best films ever made. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (Jones, Tommy Lee 2005 IMDB) 10/10 This is one of the best films this decade by far and is one of the best westerns ever made. Andruini was right in saying that this is a masterpiece. An amazingly shot and acted film from Jones. Can't wait to see what Jones can do next since this was one hell of a directorial debut. The shots and cinematography are both spot on! And like beed said the way the story is told just adds to the greatness of the film. I wish I had seen it on the big screen so that I could get the full effect of the Texas deserts. This was one hell of a film! Highly recommended. Might be my favorite movie of 2005!

The Samurai Trilogy (Hiroshi Inagaki) (1954-6) Bottom line, overall, I was a little disappointed. Then again, guess that's just me on Kurosawa withdrawal, with this being the first non-Kurosawa Japanese film I've ever seen, so I guess I should've expected somewhat lesser quality. Some very good things, like the duel at the beginning of part 2 and the battle against 80 bandits at the end of part 2, the duel at the end of part 3, and some excellent cinematography. However, other than Mifune, who could never do wrong in terms of acting, some of the acting was hammy and a lot of the story was a little too melodramatic. Overall, a very good trilogy, but not quite on the outstanding/masterpiece level, I thought. Part 1: 8/10 Part 2: 7.5/10 Part 3: 8.5/10 Overall: 8/10

Quite a long time since I posted here. Here are some of the films I`ve seen since last time:
A Better Tomorrow: A very good film, though with flaws. I love Yun Fat in this film. The plot is interesting, though a bit overly melodramatic in parts, and the shootouts are great. I like both Hard Boiled and The Killer better than this piece of Hong Kong action cinema, but overall A Better Tomorrow is enjoyable and a great piece of actiondrama from Woo. 7/10
The Wild Bunch: Fantastic film, with two superb shootouts. I think you all know what I mean. Great film all around, though the story get a bit "cold" in places. 9/10
The Giant Gila Monster: Ok horror b-movie with some entertaining value. Nothing memorable though. 5/10
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children: The actionscenes are impressive and the music is great, but the story gets a bit unclear for those not too familiar with the game. Still a pretty good animated film. 6.5/10
Oldboy: Seen this two times before. Still a great film. I think this may become a classic over the time. 9/10
The Man in the Iron Mask (1977, made for tv): What a horribel mess! Pathetic zoom-ins and annoying music, bad acting and boring as hell. 2/10
Au Hasard Balthazar: A bit dissapointed. I found it interesting, and overall I think it`s a good film. But I didn`t like the editing. It seemed like Bresson wanted to tell too much on too little time. The scenes ended too early. But good acting and interesting "plot" makes this a good film. And of course the cinematography is great, except the clipping. Need a rewatch. 7/10
Frankenstein (1931): Great film with wonderful atmosphere and a fantastic monster in the lead role. Great make-up and pretty good acting, combined with a interesting plot makes this a great film that has to be seen again. 8/10
Akahige: I love Kurosawa, and I loved this one at least as much as I liked Seven Samurai. So beautiful, both inside and outside. Deals with "compassion" in a highly satisfying way, Kurosawa delivering scene after scene with incredibly warmth. A Fantastic film! 9/10

From Dusk till Dawn (Robert Rodriguez; 1996) A very fun vampire movie. Doesn't take itself too seriously. Clooney, Keitel, and even Tarantino are great in this. "So, are you a faithless preacher, or are you a mean mother fuckin' servant of God?" 9.5/10

Dazed and Confused (re-watch) 10/10 Still the best teen comedy made even better by the fact I was on my way to a concert! I can never get sick of this movie, man. The Exterminating Angel (Buñuel, Luis 1962 IMDB) 10/10 Oh man this was like a fucking Twilight Zone episode, Buñuel style! The story is so fun and watching these characters change is even more fun. The performances are spot on for the roles as upper class citizens. It’s hilarious how they are forced to live on their own. The film is about people invited to a house for dinner who spend the night at the house. They wake up and realize they cannot leave, there is nothing stopping them they just can’t go. I am glad to finally see a Spanish Buñuel film and look forward to seeing MANY, many more. I wonder if that hand scene was an inspiration for the hand scene in Evil Dead II? The Skeleton Key (Softley, Iain 2005 IMDB) 3/10 Just another clichéd new horror film. I made so many jokes throughout the film about how bad it was. The whole film was marketed on it’s twist ending which was just ridiculous. The movie was absolutely nothing special and didn’t even deserve to be watched by me. The only semi-good part was John Hurt.

Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone) (1984) REWATCH Probably Leone's 3rd best film (behind OUATITW and GBU), but don't let that make ya think it's of lesser quality...this is still a masterpiece, through-and-through, and one of the most underrated films of the 80s. Granted, it drags at points in the middle, particularly with the Treat Williams union storyline, but other than that, Leone shows in all 4 hours how gifted he was as a director, lingering on shots that other directors wouldn't think to focus on, and doing other things to make the film dream-like and quite the watch. 9/10
