Just watched Primer for the hundredth time. It only goes for 1 1/4 hours, and as such it can easily be viewed over and over again, and each time something more is revealed. Primer is an ingenious film. I never get tired of it. 96%

Primer was just really confusing to me. I didn't understand it all that well. I watched it twice too. Maybe I'm not intellectual enough for it.

Watched The Ordeal (Calvaire) last night. Holy crap this is one weird, sick & pretty intense film. I usually hate it when reviewers say something along the lines of "this film is like...meets...crossed with..." But it really is fair to say that this film is like The League of Gentlemen (British comedy series), Deliverance, Straw Dogs and The Collector. Some great cinematography & camera work. Oh! and Phillipe Nahon (Seul Contre Tous, Irreversible, Haute Tension) is in it. Check it out. ****/*****

Yes I agree calvaire is extraordinarily depraved and twisted. The sound work is phenomenal, every pig grunt and squeal........ All that and its actually quite a good film.

Lost in Translation 9/10 This film was great! It is really funny and Bill Murray was amazing like always! Scarlett Johansson was also good in this film.

I'll probably get flamed for this but I hated Lost in Translation as much as I hated Crash (2005).

The blowtorch is firing up! How could you hate that film? It's one of the best of this decade! It is no where near as bad as Crash! Crash sucks so much. This isn't even comparable (both in style and quality.)

Put the blowtorch down my friends. Do not get medieval on my arse. Look, what do I know? I'm a middle aged boring old fart who very possibly doesn't know (as you American's put it) shit from shinola. But I do know what I like (or more to the point, what I dont like) and I dont like LiT. It did absolutely nothing for me & I dont want to patronise you by using a bunch of generic, meaningless adjectives...but come on, it's boring, dull, pointless, predictable...Jim Jarmusch can do this kind of thing while taking a wizz. Hey, Virgin Suicides was great. And I like Bill Murray (especially stuff from early 80's - but also thought he was great recently in Life Aquatic & Broken Flowers. And Scarlett J can do no wrong. Well, except Lit. And The Island. I love her in Man who wasn't there & Ghost World. Please dont ban me from the boards because I dont like LiT. You're the only friends I have.

Well your in luck seeing as how I am in charge of these boards and I agree with everything you said! I also hated the film. It was very pointless, it felt like I just watch NOTHING. Left be bored to tears. I didn't laugh once, hell I didn't even have any reaction except boredom and amazement that a film could get so praised and be that bad. I agree with your Jarmusch line to and I don't even like him that much! It just was not what I had hoped.

Kagemusha- 10/10. My third favorite Kurosawa. It was an excellent film. The cinematography and the colors were just as good as Ran. I also like the story a little bit better too. But, the thing that keeps Ran ahead was the fact that Kagemusha really didnt have a significant battle scene, when Ran has two. Kagemusha could have had a great battle scene, but it all took place off screen.

I think I`m kind of in the middle here. I don`t love Lost in Translation, but I doesn`t hate it either. I think it`s a good film, but it didn`t give me enough. A bit overrated it is.
I saw Aguirre, Der Zorn Gottes last night (for the 4th time) and I still think its a great piece of art. Films aren`t made this way anymore, which is a shame. Aguirre is a poetic, dreamlike experience you should not miss. 9/10

In the last few days i've watched:
Crimson Gold. Iranian drama about a depressed ex-soldier who delivers pizzas to the (usually) wealthy. Well worth checking out. Great performances, well directed, interesting structure. ****/*****
Ma Femme est un Actrice. Sweet & engaging. And it has Charlotte Gainsbourg. ****/*****
The Squid & the Whale. Loved it. Fantastic performances (welcome back Will Baldwin). Funny. Some great semen jokes!!! ****/*****
Syriana. Well meaning but very heavy handed. Ultimately the film does not work due to scriptwriter (Gaghan) attempting to cram in too much irrelevant stuff. Should have been much better. **1/2/*****

Syriana was better than a 2 1/2. Out of 5 I would have given it a 3.5. It was extremely confusing. And it never really came together all that well, But it was still enjoyable and well made.

I thought I was being generous giving it the extra 1/2 to be honest. I did not find Syriana to be well made or enjoyable & that's why it scores poorly. Dreadful, heavy handed screenplay. Gaghan is just trying to be too damn clever by flitting all over the globe every 10 seconds. Loads of stuff could have been cut: i.e the Matt Damon subplot was completely uneccesary & detracted from the film's potential power. Gaghan did so much better with Traffic. Very disappointing.

I agree with satantangofan. I thought Syrian was awful. Gaghan is talented. Read the screenplay for Traffic. Maybe he shouldn't direct.

Hey, respect. Everyone is entitled to their opinion yeah? And that's the great thing about debating films. It's all so bloody subjective.
