Also reading Heart of Darkness. Just got done reading The Stranger by Albert Camus, and it might be my new favorite.

Re-reading To Kill a Mockingbird for school. Amazing as remembered. I'm looking for something to read on my own. Any suggestions?

1984 by George Orwell ... and it's about freaking time. Required reading for the average white male between the ages of 12-26, cynical toward false hopes provided by your local and national government and angry against "the man." I would fit in this demographic, but I found it way too fucking depressing for its own good. Fahrenheit 451 at least provided some reasoning behind it; 1984 just kind of was, and I can't get behind that.

I've been reading Peter Benchley's Jaws after finding it for a dime earlier this week or last week (they're all kind of blending together in a kind of waiting for the bus kind of thing).
Starting out with reading somewhere about how sharks don't actually go into shallow water, I started reading critically into the book and I'm finding it to be really stale. There's more than one politically incorrect term used, to the point where the whole book is discounting my interest in the movie. Example: "If every house was not rented, there wouldn't be enough work for Amity's blacks..."
It is good that I'm actually reading, but I'm really just reading this as pulp. Maybe a couple scientific words here and there, but on page 35, there still hasn't been anything of real intellectual value.
I'd try to read more of the Divine Comedy, which has been sitting around my room for the past two months, because little I have read of it definitely lives up to my expectations. I guess I just don't have the time for it, as unfortunately I spend too much time at my computer.

I never liked Jaws--the book. The movie made the story so much less clinical and more of a human story.

The Great Gatsby. A very approachable 'classic'. Very enjoyable and delightfully well described. Wonderful really

Yeah, Jaws the novel is just too wordy. There's a certain, shall we say, flow to the read that's made it easy enough to read, but I think that's less an achievement on Benchley's part and more of me wanting to just plow through the book. I know some people don't like the Great Gatsby around here, but it was a decent read in high school. Don't remember too much of it, but it wasn't painful for me. I see a few cheap copies of it from time to time, but I think I already have it, and if I don't, I don't need to buy it again. No problem. I still need to get a start on the Divine Comedy, and would probably also read some of Joyce's stream of consciousness. I read up about it maybe five or so years ago and the idea just really stuck with me, so eventually I need to sit down and experience it proper. But until then, working / job-hunting / posting / sleeping.

Had to return the Divine Comedy a while back so right now I'm not reading any books. I didn't want to put the nail on the coffin on Jaws, so I just let it be.

I have to read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley for English... I hope you enjoy it...? You're probably at the perfect age to read it. If I were to read it, I'd be far too cynical about everything in general to really buy it, but you're still just getting your sense of cynicism toward the world, so you could easily identify with it. ;D

Yea, I have been looking forward to reading it for awhile. Though I get the feeling that I'm going to prefer 1984.
