Jefferson Starship - "Surrealistic Pillow" w/bonus tracks 9.5/10 or 10/10Such a great album, there are a couple songs on it that aren't up to par, but when they are great, they are some of the greatest songs I have heard. The bonus tracks are also nice to have, but not really needed. Grateful Dead - "American Beauty" 7/10I am just not a huge fan, in fact, I really don't like them at all. They are way too country for me, if only they were more blues. I find them highly overrated, but the song "Box of Rain" on this album is one of the best songs ever made, and some of the tracks are pretty good. Definitely worth a look/download, if only for "Box of Rain". What album should I listen to next, though?

^You don't listen to studio albums to get into the Dead. You listen to the live stuff, go through some Dick's Picks records, then you will see the true nature of the Dead.

I'm trying to listen to as many of the Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time as possible this summer, so I started with #1
Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band 10/10

All Perfect Scores(10/10): Dream Theater- Train Of Thought HOLY SCHNIKES! My first Dream Theater experience, and to quote Andruini, it pretty much kicked my ass.
Van Morrison- Astral Weeks HOLY SCHNIKES! I can see why this made the top 20 of RS' 500 Greatest Albums.

i don't think you can comment lists on rateyourmusic. but yeah, there are some surprising things. a lot of it i have heard, but then there are some albums on there i am really dying to hear. i can't believe you like "battle for l.a." more than "rage against the machine", but both are excellent. definitely not my favorite dylan album at all, but it is still a perfect album. have you heard "bringing it all back home" or "blood on the tracks"? i like that you included a little bit of all my favorites. thank god you threw some sex pistols on there, i didn't know if you actually loved it that much. you would probably like dead kennedys a lot. all the nirvana on there is my only problem, but other than that, great list.

Beinf the general music ignoramus that I am I've been looking at some of you guys favourite '07 albums. So I downloaded 1990's cookies, which I think beef or andruini listed. Anyway, I listened and this is a really excellent album! Great lyrics and guitar riffs, I like it very much! Favourite songs - is there a swtich for that and you're supposed to be my friend. Though its all a good fun album

Yeah I'm really pleased for the suggestion! The whole album is just such happy fun ;D Anyway yeesterday I listened to: Its the first full listen I've had of a Waits album. Whole album is mostly good. I love the sound of the music. It sorta reminds me of noises from the first crash bandicoot game But the drums/xylophone sound really complement Waits voice and work well througohut. My favourite song here is probably tango till they're sore. But so many songs are good like walking Spanish, Time, Jockey full of bourbon and downtown train.

Highway 61 revisited I'm falling in love with Bob Dylan This is another great album by him. Its just so beautiful and lyrically unexpected. Dylan sometimes doesn't rhyme but his voice is able to fit the words together, if people see what I mean. I just love that. Great voice. Ballad of a thin man, very good song. I really like these lyrics. Then obviously desolation row, stunning. Ive listened to some of blood on the track as well, idiot winde and shelter from the storm being instant standouts.....

yes! "highway 61 revisited" is a masterpiece. so many good songs off of it. and i know what you mean, sometimes he doesn't rhyme, but it always sounds good. "idiot wind" is definitely an amazing song off of "blood on the tracks", too. wait till you hear "lily, rosemary and the jack of hearts". have you heard it yet?

Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime 9/10
Some great songs and usually catchy filler, although it didnt need to have 43 songs.

Radiohead- In Rainbows Fantastic. I think it's their best since OK Computer. (Kid A is certainly good, it's just not my thing.) Favorite track is "Reckoner."
Jimmy Eat World- Chase This Light If this forum wasn't dead, I'd probably get some shit for liking Jimmy Eat World. This is a pretty good effort. Not as good as Clarity or Futures, but about as good as Bleed American. Favorite track is "Here It Goes."

The Mars Volta- Bedlam in Goliath 10/10 This is a much better record than Amputechture and I think that is because it is more focused. The rhythms are intense and very guitar based. And the songs never become too spastic, always remaining in a state of controlled whirlwind. Goliath and Illyena are the top songs here. Mars Volta fans should seek this out immediately.

andruini, I plan on having a tag at Rate Your Music for each month I listen to a CD. It's not quite as linear as a text list, but it's easier just to tag a CD with "2008/02" when I listen to this month, and "2008/03" when I listen to it next month.

Kode9+ The Spaceape 6.5/10 Pretty laid back record, nothing else on it is as good as 9 Samurai, but oh well. It was still an enjoyable listen.

Kode9+ The Spaceape 6.5/10 Pretty laid back record, nothing else on it is as good as 9 Samurai, but oh well. It was still an enjoyable listen. You gave it close to the same score I gave Under the Table and Dreaming... Hmm is that passive aggressiveness I sense? Some stand-out tracks: Kingstown - The intro really awed me the first time I heard it. Quantum - Video game sound effects; 'nuff said. Addiction - Sounds almost like chiptunes at times. Portal - The closest thing to hip hop on this album. edit: Also, you should get past the fact that Hayasaka Fumio only shows up on one song. Sure, he can lay down some dope shit, but he's not the focus here. I want to post some rough drafts to some 100~ word reviews I'll eventually post at RYM. Rip 'em apart. Dylan - 3.5/5 Okay, so the score is a bit low because this one-disc album pulled a trick on me: it said DYLAN, and really, that's all the reason I needed to borrow it. Based on the stylish cover sans photos, I assumed it was a live concert of all these hits. But then I read the liner notes: "Trying to fit the best..." Oh, it's a compilation, not a big fan; thanks for not telling me. But as the notes say, "consider this a compass and a map." That's reasonable enough, though I'd suggest just diving right in. --- Youth Dub EP - 4/5 For some reason, Matisyahu just can't get it right. Either, his albums are filled to the brim with filler, or there's just a bunch of frilly extras tacked onto the sound that just drag everything down. I really want to like what he does, and this dub remix provided by Bill Laswell is probably the closest I'll get. [More about how it's not great, but not too bad, yada, yada, yada. Maybe the Matisyahu conversation should be moved over to his thread, maybe not.] --- Firefly OST - 4/5 You have a couple interesting points here, most of which are subtly well executed in the show and some that can even work by themselves. But as a collection of this nature, it all starts to sound the same. The same musical motifs are used throughout the album, and you have plenty of tracks that generically expressing one specific mood or display this "curious" musical style. I guess my point is that for just light listening, it's decent enough, but [] Sure, that's a common complaint for movie and TV soundtracks, but I've heard some good ones on both sides, so I'll go with it. Anyways, one thing I realized when I was listening to this album was how playing the instrument is key.[] [Artist91874,Edmonson] and Whedon used a lot of different "world" instruments, but since the instruments are only played in what feels like a strictly Westernized style, they all sound, well, Westernized.[] (This one is just too long. I'd like to trim some of it out. Is it too biting for the soundtrack to a TV show I like? Was I just disappointed?) --- And those are my furthest in progress reviews. Here are some of my others, which aren't as many as I could throw down because I should be looking for new employement, not writing about music.
